Buying Your First Electric Guitar

When you’re looking for your first electric guitar, it’s a good idea to ask yourself some simple questions before buying your first electric guitar.

Here are a handful of things to consider before buying.

1. How does it feel? Remember it’s got to FIT you. When you pick up the guitar and strum a few chords you’ll know if the guitar fits you or not. If it doesn’t fit, don’t buy it. Simple as that.

2. Sound. It’s your first electric guitar so you’re not sure yet what constitutes a good sound. Basically, if it sounds good to you, it is good.

3. Price. How much should you spend? Well, mostly you get what you pay for. Yes, there are guitars available for less than $300, and they may play fine. But in the long run they probably will never be more than just OK. So while your budget is your budget, you shouldn’t look at buying ypur first electric guitar as just another financial transaction. Remember, the pleasure, growth and satisfaction you’ll get from playing the guitar are why you’re buying, not the instrument, and that’s what makes it all worthwhile.

4. Extras. Let’s be honest, all guitar players love knobs, dials and switches like babies love candy. Forget about them. Stomp boxes and effects pedals are getting better and cheaper every eight weeks, so wait until you know what you want. There will be not short supply when you finally decide to buy.

5. New vs.Used? New means it’ll cost you more but comes with a warranty, and hasn’t been ruined by someone else. Used is cheaper, you may get more for your money, but no idea how it’s been treated. It’s a judgement call on your behalf.

6. On-line vs. in-store? Online every time for me. I’ll try the guitar in store, get the information from the clerks and then look for it online. If it’s available for a better price I’ll buy, if not, I’ll wait until it is. I get my picks and strings and sometines amps from my local guys…that’s where they make their money, not selling guitars.

Buying your first electric guitar is like falling in love for the first time…you’ll never forget
